Information is now available on USA Swimming’s website,

regarding the topic of including swimmers with a disability
on teams and in meets. Brochures are also available
for coaches, swimmers, officials and parents.
Disability Championships
– April 2004
12 swimmers for southeastern swimming competed in Minneapolis
This was also a trials meet for the US Paralympic Team
The following swimmers were selected to go to Athens:

Ivy Garrison
Carlie Haynie
Carrie Willoughby
Angel Langner
Danile Kamber
Carlie Haynie received a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke and set
and American record. Carrie Willoughby set and American record in the
50m butterfly.
2. The US Paralympic meet originally planned for December
has been cancelled.
3. Convention
A. Championships
2005 Disability Championships will
be held in Minneapolis in June.
2006 Disability Championships will
be in Federal Way, Washington
B. Zone Meet
The southern zone meet in 2005 will be
an inclusion meet. Each LSC
may send up to 3 male and 3 female
swimmers with a disability.
C. The national adapted committee has put
together a mentor list for
coaches, athletes, and parents by
disability classification.
4. A specific proposal to include swimmers with a disability
at the LSC championship level will be
presented at the spring meeting.

INFO ON THE USA SWIMMING WEB SITE
There is lots of useful information on the USA Swimming
web site.
Brochures on inclusion. Click on "select a section,"
then "programs/adapted," then "go!" There
are five brochures -- one for coaches, one for officials,
one for swimmers and parents, one for meet and safety
directors, and one for LSC boards. Draft versions
of the brochures are posted at this point. Headquarters
staff is currently adding artwork and formatting this
information for print brochures that should be ready
later this year.
U.S. PARALYMPIC CORPORATION
Charlie Huebner, executive director of the U.S.
Association for Blind Athletes, has been selected
by the USOC to head the newly created U.S.Paralympic
Corporation.
